At a time when people are increasingly turning to nature, herbs and traditional remedies, it’s worth reminding ourselves of the American sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) – a magnificent tree that is not only ornamental but also medicinal. This species, native to North America, is known for its star-shaped leaves that turn into bright shades of red, orange and purple in autumn.
And although its medicinal resin has been used for centuries in folk medicine and aromatherapy, the sweetgum is rarely encountered in Czech gardens. Perhaps it’s time to change that.
What the American sweetgum is and why it should be part of your garden
The American sweetgum is a deciduous broadleaf tree that in its native range reaches up to 20 meters, but here it can be grown in smaller forms, for example as a solitary ornamental tree or in containers. Its crown has an elegant shape and in autumn it transforms into a fiery natural spectacle.
A typical feature are its spiky spherical fruits, which not only attract the eye but also have practical uses in natural medicine and cosmetics.
This tree is interesting not only in appearance but also for its scent – the sweetgum’s resin has a warm, balsamic aroma reminiscent of myrrh or frankincense.
Medicinal effects of American sweetgum resin
Sweetgum resin, sometimes also called “American myrrh”, was used for centuries by the indigenous peoples of the Americas and by European physicians. It has pronounced antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects.
Main effects:
- 🌿 Has antibacterial and healing properties – accelerates wound regeneration, helps with eczema, acne and skin inflammations.
- 🌬️ Relieves coughs, bronchitis and colds – its aroma loosens the airways.
- 🧴 Suitable for ointments and balms – it can be combined with coconut oil and beeswax.
- 🕯️ Used in aromatherapy – brings calm, relaxation and strengthens mental balance.
In the past sweetgum resin was valued as much as myrrh or frankincense. Native Americans used it as a balm for wounds and burns, while Europeans added it to ointments, tinctures and scented blends.
How to grow sweetgum in Czech conditions
Although it originates from North America, sweetgum adapts relatively well to the Central European climate. If you give it suitable conditions, it will reward you with a magnificent appearance and usefulness.
Basic rules for cultivation:
- 🌞 Site: a sunny, warm spot protected from strong winds.
- 🌧️ Soil: moist but well-draining, ideally humus-rich and slightly acidic.
- ❄️ Frost resistance: tolerates frosts down to –20 °C, so it’s suitable for most areas of the Czech Republic.
- 🌱 Growing in containers: young trees can also be grown in pots on terraces.
- ✂️ Pruning: not necessary, occasional shaping of young shoots is sufficient.
You can plant sweetgum as a solitary focal point of the garden, where its colorful crown will stand out, or integrate it into a natural medicinal garden with other herbs and aromatic plants.
Practical tips on how to use sweetgum
- 🌿 Collect resin only from injured branches – never cut a healthy tree.
- 🧴 Make a homemade ointment – mix the resin with coconut oil and beeswax, ideal for wounds and eczema.
- 🌸 Create a natural perfume – dissolve the resin in alcohol and add a few drops of essential oil.
- 🌰 Dried fruits can be used as natural decoration or a moth repellent.
Tip: You can combine sweetgum with other medicinal plants such as lavender, sage or thyme – together they create a magical and functional garden full of fragrance and health.
Why the American sweetgum should have a place in your garden
The American sweetgum is not just a beautiful tree – it is a living symbol of the connection between nature, health and aesthetics. Its presence brings harmony, scent and energy to the garden that no artificial decoration can replace.
While in the past this tree was valued as a medicinal treasure, today it can find its place again – not only as a source of health, but also as a part of a return to a natural lifestyle.
