Diabetes is a disease that affects approximately one million people in the Czech Republic and their number is still increasing. Most of us think we know the typical symptoms of diabetes, such as unquenchable thirst, frequent urination, or numbness in the hands and feet. However, there are lesser-known signals that many patients themselves are often unaware of.
These warning signs are sent by the body long before serious complications occur. If you pay attention to them, you can detect diabetes in time and prevent unnecessary health problems.
1. Skin changes that cannot be ignored
One of the first lesser-known symptoms is dark, velvety-looking patches in skin folds – most often on the neck, in the armpits, or on the joints. This condition is medically called acanthosis nigricans and is closely associated with high blood sugar levels. If it appears on the body, it’s time to see a doctor.
2. Unexpected changes in vision
Diabetes can significantly affect vision as well. Sometimes blurred vision appears, other times it may seem that vision has temporarily improved. These fluctuations are caused by shifts in bodily fluids that also affect the eye’s lens.
3. Gradual hearing loss
If you notice you’re turning up the TV volume or more often asking others to repeat what they’re saying, it could be a warning sign. According to studies, the nerves and blood vessels in the ear can be damaged by long-term elevated blood sugar levels.
4. Persistent skin itching
Dry and itchy skin is often associated with circulatory disorders caused by diabetes. If ordinary creams don’t help, it’s a reason to get examined. This symptom often appears on the legs, hands, or back.
5. Poor wound healing
One of the most serious symptoms is poor wound healing. High glucose levels weaken blood vessels and slow tissue regeneration, which increases the risk of infections. Do not ignore this symptom, especially if you are older or take blood-thinning medications.
Why is it important to know these symptoms?
Symptoms of diabetes can be inconspicuous, but if you recognize them in time, you can change your lifestyle and reduce the risk of serious complications. Don’t wait until problems worsen – the sooner you act, the better your chances are for a quality and healthy life.
