Once a year you should treat yourself to a detox cure with juniper berries – small dark berries that also grow in the Czech countryside. Juniper is not just a spice for game – it is a powerful medicinal plant that supports digestion, cleanses the body, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol and helps with inflammations.
What is common juniper?
Common juniper (Juniperus communis) is a low-growing conifer whose fruit – dark blue to black berries called juniper berries – ripen in the autumn. The plant is widespread throughout Europe, Asia and North America. In our country it can be found from lowlands to mountainous areas. Juniper is known for its strong antiseptic, diuretic and detoxifying effects.
The famous healer Sebastian Kneipp recommended a regular annual cure with juniper berries to cleanse the body and strengthen health.
1) Juniper juice: Natural detox and fat burning
Ingredients:
- 250 g juniper berries
- 1.5 liters of water
- juice of half a lemon
Method: Clean the berries, wash them and remove any damaged ones. Place them in a glass container and pour water over them (ratio 1:6). Add the lemon juice, close and let stand at room temperature for several days – until the berries begin to sink to the bottom. Then strain and drink 1 to 3 glasses daily.
Tip: Juniper berries can be reused while they still float on the surface.
2) Juniper tea for digestion and urinary tract
Ingredients:
- 1 small teaspoon of dried juniper berries
- 200 ml boiling water
Gently crush the juniper berries, pour boiling water over them and let steep for 10 minutes. Then strain and drink three times daily.
Warning: Juniper tea is not suitable for people with kidney disease, pregnant or breastfeeding women.
3) Health effects of juniper
- Support for digestion, appetite, bloating
- Urinary tract infections, kidney detoxification
- Reduction of cholesterol and triglycerides
- Help with skin problems – eczema, psoriasis
- Relief for rheumatism and arthritis (tincture, oil)
- Strong antioxidant and antibacterial effects
4) Juniper berry tincture
Ingredients:
- 150 g dried juniper berries
- quality vodka or brandy
Method: Place the juniper berries in a glass container and cover with alcohol so they are completely submerged. Let infuse for 14 days in a dark place. Shake occasionally. Then strain and store in the dark. Take 10–20 drops daily in water.
5) Juniper in the kitchen and home pharmacy
Juniper berries are used in marinades, sauces and alcoholic beverages – especially when preparing game or homemade borovička and gin. Store dried berries in a dry, dark place.
Conclusion
Common juniper is one of the most valuable gifts of Czech nature. It helps with detoxification, infections, inflammations and digestive problems. Whether you make tea, juice or a tincture from it, your body will appreciate it.
Treat yourself at least once a year to a juniper cure – a natural path to a healthier body and stronger immunity.
