Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) is often an overlooked but beautiful houseplant that can delight with its flowers every year – if you know how to care for it properly. Many people complain that it doesn’t bloom for them, or blooms at the wrong time. In fact, this plant only has a few simple rules.

Where it comes from and why it doesn’t behave like a typical cactus

Although the name suggests it is a cactus, in reality the Christmas cactus is more of a tropical plant. It originates from the Brazilian rainforests, where it grows in the humid understory. Understanding its natural environment is the key to successful cultivation.

Light and temperature

The Christmas cactus requires indirect light – preferably by an east or north-facing window. The ideal temperature is between 15 and 23 °C. During the rest period, which is necessary for flowering, it is advisable to lower the temperature to 10–12 °C.

Watering

Unlike typical cacti, the Christmas cactus needs a moister environment. Between waterings allow the substrate to dry out completely. Overwatering can cause root rot. To increase humidity, place the pot on a tray with water and pebbles, from which the water will evaporate.

Soil and fertilizer

The plant prefers an airy and well-draining substrate, ideally a succulent mix with peat. After flowering add a fertilizer for flowering houseplants. Do not fertilize at all during the dormant phase.

How to encourage flowering

In order for the Christmas cactus to bloom, it must go through a dormant period that lasts about 4 weeks. During this time:

  • provide the plant with 12–14 hours of darkness daily,
  • keep the temperature between 10–12 °C,
  • limit watering.

Once buds appear, move the plant back to a bright spot and do not change its position anymore – it could drop the buds.

Conclusion

If you want your Christmas cactus to bloom every year, attend to the proper conditions – indirect light, moderate watering, a cooler dormant phase and patience. With these simple steps this flowering houseplant will adorn your home each holiday season with its beautiful flowers.
