Many people use fabric softener only for its scent, but few know that it can work even better if you add ordinary table salt to it. This household trick was taught to me by my sister and I’ve been using it regularly ever since. Because of it, laundry not only smells lovely, but also keeps its colors longer and looks fresher.

Why add salt to the fabric softener?

Fabric softener tends to act on fabrics like “glue”, which can, in towels or delicate laundry, lead to them losing their absorbency or elasticity. By adding water and a tablespoon of salt you will achieve that the fabric softener has a more balanced effect:

  • the laundry will remain soft and fluffy,
  • colors will be fixed and won’t fade as quickly,
  • the scent will last much longer,
  • and you’ll also save money, because the fabric softener mixture doubles.

Economic and ecological advantage

If you want to wash more cheaply but still effectively, this recipe is ideal. The mixture of salt and water dilutes the fabric softener without it losing its effect. On the contrary – the laundry will be more fragrant and the colors brighter. In addition, it’s a more ecological solution, because salt also acts as a natural water softener.

A great tip is also to add a few drops of tea tree oil. This oil not only smells nice but also works as a natural disinfectant. It acts against bacteria and viruses and ensures that the laundry will be hygienically clean.

How to prepare homemade fabric softener with salt

You need:

  • 1 liter of room-temperature water
  • 1 tablespoon of table salt
  • 1 liter of fabric softener

Instructions:

  1. Pour the water into a container and add the salt. Stir thoroughly so that the salt crystals dissolve.
  2. While stirring continuously, pour in the fabric softener.
  3. Store the mixture in a plastic bottle and use it the same way as regular fabric softener.

If, for example, you only have half a liter of fabric softener, simply use half a liter of water and half a tablespoon of salt. The principle is always the same – adjust the amount of water and salt to the amount of fabric softener.

Results that will surprise you

After the first try you’ll notice the difference. Towels will be soft, laundry will smell pleasantly for much longer than usual, and the colors won’t fade even after several washes.

This simple household trick is suitable for every home. It is quick, cheap, and effective.
