Do you have houseplants at home that don’t grow the way you’d like? They don’t bloom, lose color, or look tired? Instead of expensive store-bought fertilizers, reach for what you already have at home. A simple ingredient we use almost every day – rice – hides a power that can literally awaken life in your flowerpots.

Why rice water specifically and how does it help?

Rice is rich in B vitamins, phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen and other beneficial substances. These nutrients help plants form strong roots, support healthy leaf growth and especially abundant flowering. Rice flour dissolved in water thus becomes a natural energy cocktail for any houseplant – and it will cost you almost nothing.

How to make homemade fertilizer from rice water?

The whole process is quick and easy. It will only take a few minutes and the result is definitely worth it.

You will need:

  • 100 grams of dry rice
  • 1 liter of clean water
  • a blender or coffee grinder
  • a sealable container for preparing the fertilizer

Procedure:

  1. Blend the rice into a fine flour (about two minutes).
  2. Add one tablespoon of rice flour to the prepared liter of water.
  3. Stir thoroughly and let stand for at least 10 minutes.
  4. The fertilizer is ready to use.

TIP: You can prepare a larger amount and store it in the refrigerator, but always shake well before use.

How and when to apply the fertilizer?

Use the resulting solution once a week during regular watering. Pour it to the roots of each plant. The best time to apply is early in the morning, when plants absorb nutrients best.

This fertilizer is especially suitable for:

  • plants that haven’t bloomed for a long time
  • poorly growing houseplants
  • ornamental species such as orchids, ficuses or anthuriums

Benefits of rice fertilizer

  • Healthier and vibrantly green leaves
  • More flowers and longer blooming
  • Stronger roots and resistance to diseases
  • Simple and inexpensive preparation

Moreover, it is a completely natural and ecological solution that does not burden the environment and is gentle even to more sensitive plant species.

Don’t forget about overall plant care

Regular fertilizing is certainly important, but it’s not the only thing your houseplants need. Watch their needs – enough light, water and the right temperature are key. The plants will show you what they lack themselves – you just have to observe them.
