When the first symptoms of a cold appear or a viral infection knocks us down, most people reach for pharmacy medicines. I always rely on the power of nature. This homemade syrup made from onion, garlic, ginger, lemon and honey is my proven recipe that helps with treatment and recovery after illness. It is simple to prepare, pleasantly tasty and above all – it works!
Why make a homemade syrup against colds
This syrup is a real vitamin bomb. It combines the healing effects of several powerful natural ingredients that support the immune system, cleanse the body and soothe the respiratory tract. Onion and garlic are known for their antibacterial and antiviral effects, ginger warms the body and suppresses cough, lemon provides vitamin C and honey ties everything into a delicious mixture that helps the body recover.
Ingredients for the homemade syrup
- 200 g of onion (about 2 smaller onions)
- 2 cloves of garlic
- a small piece of fresh peeled ginger
- 2 organic lemons
- quality natural honey
- optionally about 10 cloves (you can also add a piece of cinnamon or a star anise)
Tip: You can adjust the proportions to taste. The syrup should be sweet but also slightly spicy – precisely thanks to the ginger and garlic.
Step-by-step syrup preparation
- Slice the onion, ginger, garlic and one lemon (well washed and scalded) into thin slices.
- Prepare a clean, sterilized jar (ideally with a volume of 700–900 ml).
- Start layering the ingredients: onion, garlic, ginger, lemon, honey, cloves or other spices.
- Continue until you have used all the ingredients.
- Finally, press the mixture down well, pour over honey and the juice of the second lemon.
How to let the syrup mature
This step is important for the proper release of all active ingredients.
- Let the syrup stand at room temperature covered (but not closed) for about 12 hours.
- Then close the jar and store it in the refrigerator for another 12 hours.
- If you want a stronger concentration, you can leave it for 24 hours at room temperature and then store it in the refrigerator for another 24 hours.
After 24–48 hours the syrup is ready. Strain it through cheesecloth or a fine sieve and store only the clear liquid extract.
How to store and use the syrup correctly
Store the syrup in a closed jar in the refrigerator. It is best to prepare it fresh as needed – this preserves its highest effectiveness.
Dosage:
- Adults: 3–6 teaspoons daily during meals.
- Children: 1–3 teaspoons daily depending on age.
Course with breaks:
- Children: 7 days of use → 7 days break.
- Adults: 14 days of use → 14 days break.
After that you can repeat the course as needed.
Health benefits of this syrup
- Immune support: The combination of honey, ginger and lemon gives the body strength to fight viruses.
- Relief of the respiratory tract: Onion and garlic help with cough, phlegm and runny nose.
- Cleansing the body: Natural substances aid detoxification and recovery after illness.
- Prevention of colds: Regular use strengthens the body’s defenses and protects against viruses.
Tips for even stronger effect
- If you’re preparing the syrup for children, use a milder honey (e.g., floral).
- For adults you can add a pinch of turmeric – it will enhance anti-inflammatory effects.
- The syrup also tastes great mixed into warm water or tea (but not hot, so vitamins aren’t destroyed).
- Keep the jar with prepared syrup away from direct light and heat.
In conclusion
This homemade syrup against colds is proof that nature often has more effective remedies than chemistry. It helps in treatment, strengthens immunity and also tastes great. It is ideal for the whole family, especially during flu season and winter viruses.
Make it at home – quickly, cheaply and with love. Your body will thank you!
