Great mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is more than just a striking plant with beautiful yellow flowers. Since ancient times people have used it as a natural remedy for earache, inflammations and earwax problems. At a time when more and more people are seeking natural alternatives to conventional medicines, mullein is returning to the spotlight.
How mullein helps with ear pain
Mullein flowers contain anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and analgesic compounds. Because of this, it can gently reduce pain and support healing without the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. It is also suitable for children (when prepared correctly), because it does not irritate or cause unpleasant sensations.

How to make mullein oil at home
Homemade mullein oil is one of the most commonly used preparations for earache. All you need are the flowers and a quality oil.
You need:
- dried or fresh mullein flowers
- quality olive or almond oil
- a glass container with a lid
- a sieve or cheesecloth
- a dark bottle with a dropper
Instructions:
- Lightly dry the flowers.
- Fill a jar halfway with them and pour in oil so that they are completely submerged.
- Let sit in a dark warm place for at least 2 weeks, shaking occasionally.
- Then strain and store in a dark glass bottle.
How to use the oil correctly
- For ear pain: Warm the oil to body temperature, put 1–2 drops into the ear, leave for 5–10 minutes. Repeat 1–2x daily.
- To soften earwax: 1–2 drops daily for several days.
- Preventively: During a cold, 1–2 drops every 2–3 days.
Safety precautions
Never use mullein oil if you suspect a perforated eardrum. Always heat it only to body temperature. For children under 2 years of age, consult a doctor beforehand.
Bonus: Mullein tea for pressure in the ears
Besides the oil you can also try mullein leaf tea, which helps with sinus infections and relieves the pressure that is transferred to the ears.
Recipe: Pour 250 ml of hot water over 1 teaspoon of dried leaves, let steep for 15 minutes and then strain. Drink 1–2x daily.
