Cough, a runny nose or a raised temperature? Our grandmothers had a simple and effective solution – natural syrups and herbal decoctions. Today we introduce a proven recipe for homemade thyme syrup, known as the poor man’s penicillin. Its taste is pleasant and its effect surprisingly strong – it helps against cough, respiratory infections and overall weakening of the body.

Why thyme?

Thyme is a powerful natural antibiotic. It has disinfectant, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects. It loosens phlegm, makes expectoration easier and soothes irritated airways. In addition, it supports digestion and strengthens the immune system. It is precisely because of these properties that it forms the basis of this homemade syrup.

Homemade cough syrup: Step-by-step recipe

Ingredients:

  • 200 g sugar (you can also use cane sugar)
  • 250 ml water
  • 1 packet of dried or several sprigs of fresh thyme
  • Optional: a piece of freshly grated ginger

Method:

  1. In a pot, heat the water with the sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  2. Add the thyme (including the stems) and simmer over low heat for about 20 minutes.
  3. If you want to increase the syrup’s effectiveness, add ginger to the mixture.
  4. After boiling, remove from the heat and let it steep covered for an additional 10–15 minutes.
  5. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth and pour into a dark glass bottle.
  6. Store in the refrigerator.

How to use the syrup?

Recommended dosage:

  • Adults: 1 teaspoon 3–4× daily
  • Children aged 6 and over: ½ teaspoon 2–3× daily

The syrup is ideal for persistent cough, chest congestion or at the first signs of a cold. It has expectorant effects – it facilitates coughing up phlegm and clears the airways.
