Our ancestors knew that against cough and phlegm we don’t always have to reach for medicines. A homemade syrup made from basic ingredients that most of us have in the kitchen can support lung health, clear the airways and strengthen immunity. This recipe is passed down in many families from generation to generation and helps both as prevention and relief in the winter months.
Why this homemade syrup works

Recipe for homemade lung syrup
Ingredients:
- 500 g of onions,
- 500 g brown sugar,
- 1.5 liters of water,
- juice of 2 lemons,
- 7 tablespoons of homemade honey.
Instructions:
- Pour the sugar into a pot and let it caramelize over low heat to a light brown color, stirring occasionally.
- Add the peeled, finely chopped onion and stir.
- Carefully pour in the water (it may splatter), stir and bring to a boil over low heat. Cook until the volume of liquid is reduced by approximately one third.
- Strain through a fine sieve, discard the onions. Let the liquid cool slightly.
- Add the lemon juice and finally the honey. Stir until the honey is completely dissolved.
- Pour into a clean glass bottle and store in the refrigerator.
How to use the syrup
- Take 1 tablespoon daily on an empty stomach before a meal.
- Continue until you have used up the entire batch.
- Prepare the next batch roughly after 3 months.
