In the cold season viruses and colds lurk around every corner. First a scratchy throat, then a persistent cough and fatigue. Our grandmothers relied on a simple, accessible and effective onion-honey syrup that soothes the throat, relieves the airways and supports the immune system.

Why it works: the power of onion, honey and lemon

  • Onion – traditionally used for colds; loosens phlegm and soothes irritated airways.
  • Honey – softens mucous membranes and helps calm the cough.
  • Lemon – provides vitamin C and a fresh taste.
  • Sugar – acts as a natural preservative, the syrup keeps better.

Ingredients

  • 500 g purple onion
  • 500 g sugar
  • 2 lemons (juice)
  • 1 500 ml water
  • 7 tablespoons of quality honey

Method (step by step)

  1. Put the sugar into a pot and let it melt over low heat while stirring constantly.
  2. Cut the onion into small cubes, add to the sugar and mix.
  3. Add the water, stir again and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated.
  4. Remove from the heat and let the mixture cool completely.
  5. Add freshly squeezed lemon juice and stir in the honey.
  6. Let infuse for 12 hours, then strain and pour into a clean glass container.

Dosage

Take 1 tablespoon before meals, 3× daily, until the cough subsides. The syrup can also be used preventively during periods of increased incidence of colds.

Practical tips

  • Store the syrup in the refrigerator in a well-sealed bottle.
  • Shake before use.
  • For a milder taste you can replace part of the sugar with cane sugar.

Safety and warnings

  • Do not give to children under 1 year because of the honey content.
  • If you are allergic to any ingredient, do not use this remedy.
  • For chronic problems, high fever or worsening symptoms, contact a doctor.
