Quick, fragrant and surprisingly light cake made from everyday ingredients. Just grate the apples, pour a simple batter over them and put in the oven for a few minutes. The result is juicy inside and beautifully golden on the surface, ideal with coffee and as a quick dessert for an unexpected visit. You can prepare it without complications and without special equipment.

For 8 portions

Ingredients

optional: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, a handful of walnuts or grated coconut for a crunchy topping

Preparation procedure

  • Preheat the oven to 180 °C (top/bottom heat). Lightly grease the pan with butter and dust with coarse flour.
  • Peel the apples, remove the cores and coarsely grate them. Let them release their juice freely, don’t wring them dry — they will add juiciness to the dessert.
  • In a bowl, whisk the eggs with the granulated and vanilla sugar, pour in the milk and the melted (not hot) butter.
  • Add the flour and a pinch of salt, mix until a smooth batter without lumps. For a fluffier result, you can add ½ teaspoon baking powder.
  • Spread the grated apples in the prepared pan and pour the batter over them evenly. Level the surface with a spatula; optionally sprinkle with cinnamon, nuts or coconut.
  • Bake 12–15 minutes depending on your oven until the edges are golden and a skewer comes out dry. After taking it out, let it cool for a few minutes, then cut into slices.

Total preparation time: 25 minutes (10 minutes prep + 12–15 minutes baking + 3 minutes cooling)

Number of servings: 8–10 (pan approx. 20 × 30 cm, thin layer of batter)

Tips and variations

  • You can replace half of the apples with pears. The dessert will be even more fragrant and very juicy.

  • Love a crunchy top? Before baking, sprinkle a tablespoon of cane sugar or almond slices over it.

  • If you only have a smaller pan, bake in a thinner layer so that it can bake in 12–15 minutes and the center doesn’t remain dense.

Serving

Serve warm, plain or with yogurt, sour cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A pinch of cinnamon on top beautifully enhances the flavor and a few chopped nuts provide a contrast of textures.

Conclusion

This “grate and bake” apple dessert is a reliable choice when you need something quick and tasty. With a few ingredients you can conjure up an aromatic tray in minutes, without long kneading or proofing. Save the recipe among your favorites — it’s great for a weekend afternoon or an everyday coffee break.
