These baked buns are a great choice if you want to snack without frying in oil. The delicate yeasted dough full of vanilla and buttery Hera browns to a golden color on the surface while staying soft inside. We fill them with a favorite jam and finish them with powdered sugar.

Preparation procedure

  • Preparing the yeast starter Crumble the yeast into the lukewarm milk, add a tablespoon of sugar and a tablespoon of flour. Stir and leave in a warm place for 10 minutes until the starter has risen nicely.
  • Preparing the dough In a large bowl mix the plain flour, egg yolks, most of the sugar, vanilla sugar, a pinch of salt, softened Hera and the starter. Work into a smooth, non-sticky dough (5–7 minutes with a mixer, 10 minutes by hand).
  • First rise Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes, until it has doubled in volume.
  • Shaping the buns Roll out the risen dough to about 1.5 cm thickness. Use a glass or cutter to cut out circles. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let them rise for another 20 minutes.
  • Creating the well Gently press a smaller glass into the center of each circle to create a well for the filling.
  • Baking Preheat the oven to 170 °C. Bake the buns for 13–15 minutes until golden.
  • Finishing and filling Brush the still-hot buns with melted butter. Put a teaspoon of jam or lekvár into each well and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
