Baked potatoes with ground meat belong among the proven classics of Czech cuisine. This recipe combines grated potatoes, juicy ground meat, sautéed vegetables and a creamy egg-and-milk custard with cheese. The result is a hearty, aromatic and perfectly combined dish that is great for a family lunch, dinner or make-ahead preparation.

Preparation procedure

  • Preparing the meat Put the ground meat into a bowl, add 2 eggs, salt, paprika and pepper. Mix thoroughly and set aside.
  • Potatoes Peel the potatoes, coarsely grate them, lightly salt and let sit for 15 minutes. Then squeeze out the excess liquid thoroughly.
  • Sautéed vegetables Heat a little oil in a pan, sauté the onion until golden, add the carrot and sauté for another 3–5 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  • Egg mixture In a bowl whisk 3 eggs with the milk and flour into a smooth, liquid mixture without lumps.
  • Assembling the casserole Grease the baking dish with oil. Spread the grated potatoes on the bottom. Evenly spread the seasoned ground meat over them. Add the sautéed onion with the carrot. Place the tomato slices on top
  • Pouring and baking Pour the egg-milk mixture over the entire dish, sprinkle with grated cheese and place in an oven preheated to 180 °C. Bake for about 40 minutes, until the surface is golden and the dish is firm.
  • Yogurt sauce Mix the sour cream, garlic, chopped dill and parsley, season with salt and pepper.
  • Serving Let the finished dish rest briefly, then serve drizzled with the yogurt sauce and sprinkled with fresh herbs.
