A proper apple cake “by the cup”, exactly the way grandmothers made it. No scale or mixer, just an ordinary 200ml cup and a few pantry ingredients. A moist base scented with cinnamon, crunchy nuts and on top a layer of jam or preserves – a homemade classic that’s ready in no time.

  • Batter: Beat the eggs with the sugar with a whisk until smooth. Stir in the semolina, ground nuts, milk and oil. Add the grated apples, then the flour, baking powder and cinnamon sugar. Finally, fold in the chopped nuts.
  • Baking: Grease and dust a small baking tray (or line with baking paper). Pour in the batter, smooth it and bake in an oven preheated to 200 °C for about 25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out dry.
