If you are looking for a recipe for rolls that are perfectly soft inside and crispy on the outside, then you will be pleased with this traditional Czech recipe. You won’t find rolls like these in a store, but you can easily prepare them at home and their aroma will transport you back to the times when your grandmother was still baking.

Preparation procedure

  • Preparing the starter: Mix 2 tablespoons of lukewarm water, the yeast, the sugar and 1 tablespoon of flour. Let the starter rest in a warm place for approximately 10 minutes, until it starts to bubble.
  • Dough: When the starter has risen, mix it with the remaining flour, salt, oil and lukewarm water. Work into a uniform and smooth dough that should be elastic and non-sticky. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 40 minutes so that it doubles in volume.
  • Shaping the rolls: After rising, divide the dough into 15-16 equal pieces. Roll each piece into an elongated flat and shape into a roll. Transfer the rolls to a baking sheet lined with baking paper and brush with a mixture of beaten egg mixed with a little milk.
  • Baking: Bake in a preheated oven either at 150 °C for 20 minutes, or at 200 °C for 10-15 minutes, until they are nicely golden and crispy.

These Czech rolls will delight you with their simplicity and taste. Whether you serve them for breakfast with butter and jam, or use them to make the perfect sandwich, they will always taste great!
