If you are looking for Christmas cookies that will impress not only with their taste but also with their original presentation, „Drunken Isidor“ is the right choice. This luxurious dessert with a delicate cocoa base, nut cream and chocolate glaze is a true treat. Its preparation is not complicated, but the result is absolutely irresistible. Try this recipe and enchant your loved ones during the holidays!

Preparation procedure

  • Preparation of the base Separate the eggs into whites and yolks. Beat the yolks with the sugar until pale and foamy. Add the softened butter and whisk. Fold in the sifted flour, cocoa, baking powder and walnuts. Finally, gently fold in the beaten egg whites with a pinch of salt. Spread the batter on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (approx. 30×40 cm). Bake for 14–17 minutes at 180 °C. Check with a skewer whether the base is done.
  • Nut filling Heat the milk with the sugar and cocoa in a saucepan. Add the walnuts and simmer briefly so the mixture thickens. Finally, stir in the rum (do not heat further). Let cool – the mixture should be thick but spreadable.
  • Buttercream Beat the butter at room temperature until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar. Add the rum and optionally the cocoa. Beat until the cream is perfectly smooth and airy.
  • Assembly Spread a layer of jam over the cooled base (recommendation: apricot or currant). Spread the nut filling over the jam. Then spread the buttercream and smooth the surface. Finally prepare the glaze – melt the chocolate with the butter and pour over the surface. Let rest in the refrigerator ideally overnight.
  • Cutting Cut the slices with a hot knife – you will get perfectly straight and clean edges.
