Preparation procedure

  • Preparation of the meat stuffing: In a bowl, mix the ground meat, cooked rice, garlic, onion, eggs, salt, and pepper. Mix everything thoroughly to form a uniform mixture.
  • Filling the peppers: Fill the peppers with the prepared meat mixture. If you have a little filling left over, you can shape it into meatballs.
  • Cooking the peppers: In a large pot, bring 1 and 1/2 liters of water to a boil with the sugar, salt, pepper, allspice, and bay leaf. As soon as the water starts to boil, add the stuffed peppers. After 15 minutes, add the meatballs as well.
  • Tomato sauce: To the boiling water, add the tomato paste mixed with ketchup and let everything cook for another 15-20 minutes.
  • Preparing the roux: Heat the oil in a pan and add the flour. Stirring constantly, fry the flour until golden, then add the sweet paprika, stir, and pour cold water over the mixture. Bring it to a boil and stir so that no lumps form.
  • Finishing the sauce: Remove the peppers and meatballs from the pot (as well as the bay leaf and spices). Add the prepared roux to the sauce, mix everything thoroughly and let it simmer. If you want a smoother sauce, you can blend it.
  • Serving: Return the peppers and meatballs to the finished sauce and serve with your favorite side dish, for example mashed potatoes or bread.
