Preparation procedure

  • Dough Cream the butter with the powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift the flour with the baking powder into the mixture and work into a smooth dough. Spread the dough over the bottom of a greased and floured baking tray (29 × 33 cm).
  • Poppy filling In a saucepan bring the milk with the sugar and poppy seeds to a boil. While stirring constantly, add the semolina and cook for 1–2 minutes, until the mixture thickens. Allow the filling to cool slightly, then spread it evenly over the prepared dough.
  • Crumble Mix the flour, sugar and vanilla sugar. Add cold butter cut into cubes and use your hands to create a coarse crumble. Sprinkle the crumble over the entire surface of the poppy filling.
  • Baking Preheat the oven to 180 °C (fan 160 °C). Bake for 35 minutes, until the surface turns golden. After baking let the cake cool, then cut into slices.
