St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum), also known as St. John’s herb, is among the most powerful medicinal herbs of our regions. It has a long tradition in folk medicine and is still used for a range of health issues – from digestive and liver problems, through nervous and skin ailments, to support for women’s health.

Its strength lies in active compounds such as hypericin, hyperforin and flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antidepressant and regenerative effects.

Where St. John’s wort grows and how to recognize it

St. John’s wort is widespread throughout Europe, Asia and North America. In the Czech Republic you can easily find it in sunny locations – in meadows, at the edges of forests, on slopes or along roads. It prefers dry, well-drained soils and open environments with plenty of sun. You can recognize it by its small yellow flowers with a reddish tinge and tiny dots on the leaves (hence the name „spotted“).

Main health effects of St. John’s wort

  • Natural antidepressant – helps with mild to moderate depression, anxiety and nervousness. It supports the production of serotonin and dopamine, thereby improving mood and sense of well-being.
  • Improved sleep – its mild sedative effects help with insomnia, especially when it is caused by stress.
  • Anti-inflammatory and healing effects – used to treat minor injuries, burns, eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.
  • Support for digestion and the liver – stimulates the production of gastric juices, improves gallbladder function, helps with stomach ulcers and supports liver detoxification.
  • Antiviral effects – hypericin may act against certain types of viruses.
  • Support for women’s health – alleviates symptoms of PMS and menopause, helps balance hormonal imbalance.
  • Strengthening immunity and blood circulation – has antibacterial effects, improves blood circulation and may help with high blood pressure or anemia.
  • Support for the nervous system – relieves tension and helps with nerve pain (e.g. sciatica, neuralgia, rheumatism).
