Scientists from around the world agree that diet plays a key role in both the development and prevention of many diseases. While poor eating habits can significantly increase the risk of lifestyle diseases, some foods can act preventively. This group includes fermented dairy products, particularly yogurt, which according to a new study has many more health effects than previously thought.
Yogurt and its impact on lung health
Yogurt is best known for its positive effects on digestion and the gut microbiome. Thanks to its content of beneficial bacteria, it helps restore the balance of the gut microflora and thereby also strengthens the immune system. However, a new long-term study revealed that its benefits go even further – regular consumption of yogurt can significantly reduce the risk of developing lung cancer.
Study lasting 13 years
The research led by experts from Oregon State University followed more than 100,000 adults over 13 years. During the study, 1,600 participants developed lung cancer. However, the analysis showed that those who regularly consumed fermented dairy products, especially yogurts, had a lower risk of this disease.
Interestingly, it did not matter whether the yogurts were low-fat or full-fat – the positive effect was observed for both variants. In contrast, no association with cancer prevention was found for cheeses.
What the experts say
“When it comes to fermented dairy products, we found that yogurt consumption was inversely associated with the risk of lung cancer. On the other hand, cheese consumption has no association,” said Dr. Lan Doan, one of the study’s authors.
Results also showed that regular drinking of whole milk may increase the risk of lung cancer by up to 24%. The study was published in the prestigious scientific journal Elsevier Clinical Nutrition.
Why lung cancer is so common
Lung cancer is one of the most common causes of death from malignant tumors in Europe. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, thousands of people die from this disease each year.
Up to 95% of lung cancer cases occur among tobacco smokers. The most common symptoms are a persistent cough, coughing up blood, and breathing problems. Prevention is therefore extremely important – and in addition to not smoking, diet can also play a role.
Yogurt as a “superfood”
Yogurt rightly belongs among so-called superfoods. Its regular consumption:
- strengthens the gut microbiome,
- supports the immune system,
- contributes to better digestion,
- may help reduce the risk of serious diseases.
Conclusion
The study’s results clearly show that fermented dairy products, especially yogurts, not only have a beneficial effect on digestion but may also act as prevention against serious diseases, including lung cancer.
If you want to strengthen your health and support your immunity, try regularly including quality yogurt in your diet.
