Most people still believe that cholesterol is caused by eating eggs, liver or bacon. Nutrition expert doctor Predrag Nenadić, however, insists on the exact opposite. According to him, the real culprits of high cholesterol are harmful sugars and industrially processed carbohydrates that silently damage the liver and contribute to fat accumulation.

Who is doctor Predrag Nenadić?

Dr. Nenadić is a renowned nutrition expert with an international education. In the past he headed the South Slavic Association of Nutrition Specialists and has published several professional books on healthy eating. He focuses primarily on the prevention of civilization diseases.

The true origin of cholesterol

According to Dr. Nenadić, high cholesterol does not arise from animal fats, as is commonly claimed. The main cause is excessive consumption of sugars – mainly in the form of sweetened drinks, baked goods and fast food. These sugars burden the liver, which converts excess sugar into fat. That fat then accumulates in liver cells and causes so‑called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

What is cholesterol and why isn’t it always bad?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance necessary for the production of hormones, vitamin D and bile acids. In small amounts it is important for the body, but an excess can be harmful – especially if LDL („bad“) cholesterol rises. Modern research, however, shows that it is not the egg that raises cholesterol levels, but precisely harmful sugars and refined carbohydrates.

What to do for a healthy liver and balanced cholesterol?

  • Drink plenty of water – the liver needs hydration for detoxification.
  • Consume bitter herbs – nettle tea, dandelion root or burdock.
  • Limit added sugars – avoid fructose syrups and sweetened drinks.
  • Include healthy fats – olive oil, avocado, nuts and fatty fish.

What does a healthy diet look like according to Dr. Nenadić?
