Do you know why the cashier always opens an egg carton? They aren’t checking whether they’re broken. Many people have no idea.

Why does the cashier check the egg carton?

When we buy eggs, the cashier always opens the box and looks inside.

They do it to find out whether the customer wants to steal something.

An egg carton seems like the ideal object to hide something in — ideal for smuggling small items.

At least that’s what management thinks and they instruct cashiers to constantly check egg cartons.

Interesting facts

You may have noticed that eggs have two shell colors: white and brown/beige.

Many people believe that this color affects the nutritional value of eggs.

Brown-shelled eggs are generally considered healthier and more natural, while white eggs are associated with factory farming. However, this belief is not true.

So how is it, then?

The color of the shell depends on the hen’s genes and the color of its feathers. Hens with white feathers lay eggs with white shells. The darker the feathers, the darker the shell.

The shell color is determined by the pigment protoporphyrin IX. Hens with brown feathers lay the most eggs, hens with white feathers the least. In short, it all depends on genes.

Of course, shell coloring can also be affected by feed, rearing methods, and the level of stress. However, these factors can only cause a slight lightening or darkening of the shell (not a complete change in color).
