Fruit that works up to 5 times better than pharmacy syrups! It reached our regions from South America as early as the time of Christopher Columbus. Originally it was a symbol of prestige and appeared only as part of the menu at large banquets.

Why is pineapple so effective?

Today this fruit is easily available and is especially popular for its sweet and refreshing taste. Besides that, it also has many health benefits.

In its native homeland pineapple has been recognized for centuries for its positive effects mainly on digestion and also because it acts as an anti-inflammatory. One of its components even has proven effects against cancer.

What is the power of pineapple?

Anti-inflammatory effects are attributed primarily to the activity of bromelain – an enzyme and a powerful antioxidant. Many studies have been carried out to examine the functions of this enzyme.

It is believed to be able to:

  • alleviate joint pain
  • help with arthritis
  • soothe inflammation
  • inhibit tumor growth
  • shorten recovery time after surgeries

Bromelain is one of the best-known dietary supplements in Germany, where it was found to help reduce inflammation and swelling of the nose and sinuses, especially after surgery or injury. This enzyme also kills bacteria and fights infections.

Vitamins and minerals in pineapple

Pineapple is rich in vitamin C, which is essential for proper immune function and healthy skin. A cup of freshly squeezed pineapple juice contains approximately 50% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C.

If you eat pieces of fresh pineapple, a single serving will provide you with up to 131% of the vitamin C needed for one day. In addition to vitamin C, pineapple contains vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid, magnesium, manganese and potassium. These nutrients support the health of bones, muscles and blood vessels.

How does pineapple affect cough treatment?

Pineapple juice is excellent for treating coughs and colds. It helps soothe a sore throat and supports the expectoration of mucus. Studies show that pineapple is up to 5 times more effective than common cough syrups.

In one study comparing a cough syrup and pineapple extract, researchers found that patients who used the natural pineapple remedy recovered 4.8 times faster and their colds had a milder course.

In 2010 scientists from India examined how pineapple juice, honey, spices and salt help dissolve phlegm in the lungs of patients suffering from tuberculosis.

For maximum effect it is necessary to drink freshly prepared pineapple juice that has not undergone chemical processing and pasteurization, which destroy the enzymes. Store-bought juices often contain a lot of sugar and little fruit.

Recipe for an effective natural pineapple remedy

If you have a juicer at home, you can prepare fresh pineapple juice. This recipe will help you fight cough:

  • 2 dcl fresh pineapple juice
  • fresh lemon juice from half a lemon
  • 1-2 cm piece of fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne (chili) pepper
  • a little turmeric (helps with digestion)

Mix all ingredients, strain through a sieve and drink twice to three times a day. This drink is great as a cough remedy and is free of added chemicals.

Extra tip to finish

The highest concentration of bromelain is in the core of the pineapple, which is often discarded. That part is tougher, but it is the healthiest part of the fruit. Next time, definitely don’t throw it away!
