If you’re looking for a dessert that will please not only the taste buds but also the eye, the curd-and-chocolate chessboard cake is the right choice. Preparation procedure

  • Preparing the dough: In a bowl, mix the milk, cocoa and sugar. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the milk mixture. Cook until all ingredients are well combined. Let the mixture cool, then add the flour, baking powder and eggs. Mix everything thoroughly with a whisk or an electric mixer on low speed.
  • Baking the dough: Prepare a baking pan (25 × 35 cm) and line it with foil or baking paper. Pour the batter evenly into the pan and bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for about 25 minutes. After baking, let the cake cool briefly and then carefully remove it from the pan.
  • Preparing the filling: In a bowl, beat the butter, powdered sugar and egg yolks. Slowly add the curd (quark) and cream and whip until smooth. Finally add the egg whites and vanilla extract and mix thoroughly. Chill the mixture for a while in the refrigerator.
  • Assembling the cake: Cut the chilled chocolate cake into about 10 even strips. Line the baking pan with foil or baking paper and place the chocolate strips in the pan at equal distances from each other. Fill the empty spaces with the prepared curd filling. Repeat the assembly process to create a second layer and achieve the chessboard effect.
  • Preparing the glaze: In a small saucepan or a double boiler, melt the chocolate with the butter (we recommend a 1:1 mix of milk and dark chocolate). Coat the finished cake with the glaze and let it set in the refrigerator for at least half an hour.
  • Finishing: You can decorate with grated chocolate.
