A quick snack for unexpected guests or an evening with wine or beer. These boldly salty, buttery and cheesy sticks are in the oven in no time and really anyone can make them. Just prepare the dough, roll it out, sprinkle with favorite seeds or cheese and bake until golden.

Preparation procedure

  • Preheat the oven to 180 °C and line the baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a bowl mix the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the softened butter, processed cheese, sour cream, egg and yolk. Work into a smooth, non-sticky dough. If the dough is loose, add a little flour.
  • Roll the dough out on a floured surface into a sheet about 1–1.5 cm thick.
  • Brush the surface with beaten egg and sprinkle with the chosen topping (sesame, caraway, grated smoked or hard cheese).
  • Cut the sheet into strips, optionally split each strip lengthwise into narrower sticks. Transfer them to a baking sheet.
  • Bake 20–25 minutes until golden and crispy. Let cool briefly on a rack and serve.

Tips and variations

  • The sticks are deliberately quite salty. If you prefer a milder flavor, reduce the salt to 1–1.5 teaspoons.

  • For extra crispiness, roll the dough into a thinner sheet and shorten the baking time by 2–3 minutes.
