Juicy chicken meat, fragrant paprika, caraway and tangy sauerkraut – together they make a hearty dish with minimal work. Everything is prepared in one roasting pan and the oven does most of the work. It tastes best with boiled potatoes, mashed potatoes or fresh bread.

  • Základ ze zelí a cibule Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Finely chop the onion, mince the garlic. Heat the lard/oil in a pan, sauté the onion until golden, add the garlic and briefly fry. Stir in the paprika, mix (do not let it turn bitter). Add the sauerkraut with its juice, the bay leaf and caraway, mix and simmer for 3–5 minutes.
  • Vrstvení do pekáče Spread the sauerkraut in the baking dish. Pat the chicken thighs dry, salt and pepper on all sides and place on the sauerkraut. Add a little stock or water so the dish doesn't dry out.
  • Pomalé pečení Cover (with a lid or foil) and bake for about 45 minutes. Then uncover, optionally add a few tablespoons of liquid, and bake for another 20–30 minutes until golden so the skin crisps.
  • Servírování Serve hot with potatoes (boiled or smashed), mashed potatoes or a slice of bread. Drizzle with the cooking juices.

  • If the sauerkraut is too sour, briefly rinse it under cold water; for a sweeter profile add a pinch of sugar.

  • The flavor is deepened by 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika or a few cubes of smoked bacon added to the onion.

  • You can briefly brush the chicken beforehand with a teaspoon of mustard and oil – the skin will brown nicely.
