Delicate nut crescents are among the traditional long-lasting cookies that are baked in the Czech Republic not only at Christmas but also at Easter.

Their preparation is surprisingly simple, the dough is wonderfully pliable and after baking it acquires a fine texture. This tried-and-true recipe is based on classic homemade preparation and, thanks to the precise ratios, always succeeds.

Preparation procedure

  • Dough preparation Sift the flour and powdered sugar into a bowl. Add the ground walnuts, baking soda and cold butter cut into small pieces. Quickly work into a smooth, tender dough. Work briskly so the butter does not warm up too much. Wrap the dough in cling film and chill for at least 30 minutes, ideally for 1 hour.
  • Shaping the crescents Prepare molds for the nut crescents. Take small portions of dough and gently press them into the dry molds. There is no need to grease them – thanks to the butter content they will release easily after baking.
  • Baking Bake the crescents in a preheated oven at 170 °C for 10–12 minutes, until they begin to turn lightly golden. After baking, unmold them while still hot and let them cool completely.
  • Chocolate glaze In a small bowl melt the chocolate and vegetable fat in a water bath. Stir the glaze and let it cool briefly so it is not too hot. Dip the ends of the crescents into the chocolate and place them on baking paper to let the glaze set.
